Biomass flexibility monetization in short-term energy markets with Bioenergie Kärnten

Bioenergie Kärnten and CyberGrid to optimize energy flexibility
April 2, 2025

Bioenergiezentrum GmbH and CyberGrid are working together to leverage the flexibility potential of Bioenergie Kärnten's biomass cogeneration plants and participate in short-term energy markets.

Bioenergie Kärnten provides green heat and electricity to the city of Klagenfurt and Liebenfels using regional biomass. Their three biomass cogeneration plants significantly contribute to climate protection by replacing coal and nuclear power with sustainable energy sources like biomass. CyberGrid specializes in providing short-term electricity flexibility marketing services through the state-of-the-art software CyberNoc. The collaboration aims to optimize the utilization of the flexibility offered by Bioenergie Kärnten's assets.

CyberGrid provides Flexibility as a Service (FaaS) for Bioenergie Kärnten, offering a comprehensive solution for monetizing energy flexibility assets. Acting as a one-stop shop, our professionals assist clients from the initial consultation through seamless technical market integration. Services include the connection, integration, management, and trading of flexibility assets, aiming to create new revenue streams by strategically bidding across multiple markets. Beyond balancing services - such as Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR), manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR), Free Energy Bids, and redispatch services - assets can also be monetized in wholesale markets, including day-ahead and intraday markets

Our fundamental services for integrating and marketing Bioenergie Kärnten's biomass cogeneration plants on the balancing services market include developing the connection concept, providing and maintaining remote control equipment, establishing the remote connection of the technical units, and their configuration and integration into CyberNoc. CyberGrid also developed the prequalification concept and managed the prequalification of Bioenergie Kärnten's energy assets with the Austrian Power Grid (APG) for balancing services marketing. This included overseeing test runs during commissioning and the subsequent commissioning of the biomass plants for marketing purposes. CyberGrid manages the marketing of the available balancing capacity of Bioenergie Kärnten's cogeneration units, conducts performance monitoring, and ensures compliance with APG's availability requirements through appropriate marketing strategies. Furthermore, CyberGrid handles market communication with relevant participants for proper energy management balancing and settlement.
